Phil and Kendra Logan Christian Service Scholarship

Background

This scholarship is to honor Pastor Phil Logan for his service as former pastor of Solomons United Methodist Church (SUMC) on two different occasions as well as Pastor Logan ‘s wife, Kendra. Phil and Kendra Logan are well known in the SUMC congregation for their selfless dedication to Christian service through their ministries of teaching and nursing.

 
We define Christian service as following the example of Jesus. We reference the Bible verse Colossians 3:12 for individuals to
clothe themselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.
 

Scholarship Purpose

The purpose of the
SUMC Phil and Kendra Logan Christian Service Scholarship
is to recognize the achievement of students who have demonstrated their belief in the philosophy of Christian service to others.

 

Requirements:

Applicant must:

  • Be a student in good standing.
  • Have applied and been accepted to a post-secondary
  • Complete and submit the following documents electronically or by mail with a postmark deadline of May 1, 2017:
  • Scholarship Application and Cover Page (12.5%)
  • Introductory paragraph introducing yourself and telling about your past, current awards and recognitions, and what you hope to achieve by continuing your education (12.5%)
  • Statement of Faith and Christian Service: Write an essay in 500 words or less to address the question: How do you know Jesus? Provide an example of a time you served Jesus. Provide one or more personal example(s) of how your heart has been changed through serving Jesus. The essay should not just include a list of ways you have served in your church (i.e. the dates you served at Vacation Bible School or in the soup kitchen) (50%).
  • References: two letters of recommendation from people who can attest to your Christian character and service (25%)
  • Be willing to be introduced and recognized at both of our Sunday worship services (9:00 am and 11:15 am) on a date

 

Selection Process

The SUMC scholarship committee will review applications. From this group of students, one will be selected as the 2017 Phil and Kendra Logan Christian Service Scholarship winner. The scholarship recipient will be notified by May 12, 2017 by telephone and letter. Applicants who are not awarded the scholarship will also be notified by letter.

 

Award Amount

This is a one time, non-renewal award of $500.00.

 

Award Restriction

The award may be applied to tuition, fees, books, room and board, or as the winner deems financially necessary. The scholarship recipient must be willing to be recognized and meet the SUMC congregation at each of our Sunday worship services on a date to be announced.
